It's been awhile!
It's been awhile since my last blog. There is so much to do with the grapes and getting ready for the Festival. The place is looking good and the grapes are really looking good. We should have about 6 to 7 tons this year. The heat is really helping. We are watering for the first time this year.
I found a bird's nest in an end post. There are five small blue eggs. I haven't seen a bird on the nest in a few days. I hope the mom comes back and hatches the eggs. I put a picture on my web site.
I sent turkey eggs to hatch at my neighbors. He sent me back 25 baby turkeys. Turkeys are so stupid that five commit suicide. Today though was different. When I went out to open their cage for the day they sounded upset about something and they were!! There was a five foot rat snake in the cage. He was full, he had eaten five babies. Pat got his shotgun and took it's head off. I'm going to have to fix the hole in the side of the cage but well worth getting rid of the snake. Like I say, "The only Good Snake is a DEAD snake" This guy was huge!!!
We have had more raccoons but not for a week or so. I've had to rinse the horses off each day because of the heat. The goats are doing great. The little ones are growing like weeds. Speaking of weeds the garden is looking pretty good too. I've picked several batches of green beans. The tomato vines are loaded. I hope they turn soon. I can't wait to can them. I planted some gourds and they are starting to climb the fence. I also planted Sunflowers this year for the first time and they have just started to put on the heads. Sunflowers have a special memory for me. When I lived in Garland and had my first horse, one of the pastures we rode in was nothing but Sunflowers. It was more like hide and seek than riding. A good memory. We've had a uninvited guest in the garden. After everything was planted I noticed that something else was coming up. Putting the garden in the old chicken pen there was no telling what was coming up. I let it go and now we have a BIG pumpkin vine taking over part of the garden. I have two pumpkins that are starting to turn yellow. There are still blooms coming on. I guess I'll have to can pumpkin too!! The lavender is finally growing, it stayed the same size for weeks.
I have made Cocoa Butter, Lavender, Shepherd's Pride and Peach goat milk soap this last week. I have several more batches to make before the festival. I got a call from one of the stores that sell my soap and they are going to want more next month.
Tomorrow they are delivering my Port-a-Potty that I've rented for the summer for my guests and the festival. Well on that note I'm going to hit the hay and say goodnight!!
