Survived the Fire
The wild fires were burning all over Oklahoma. We were watching the news and there wasn't anything close to us. Then I went outside to do something and I could smell the smoke. I heard the siren and knew it was close.
As the afternoon turn to evening the smoke seemed to clear. We relaxed and went about our usual Saturday night. Mother called me into her room, there was a very strong smell of smoke. I went outside and the smoke was so thick it burned my eyes. About that time my neighbor to the south, about a mile, called and asked if we were close to the fire? I told him I couldn't see it but I could smell the smoke. He said he couldn't tell for sure but it was a little Northwest of me. He went to see where it was. I decided that Mother and I needed to get something ready in case we needed to make a run for it. He called and said it was one mile north and one mile west. If the wind didn't change it would go by me to the north but if the wind changed it would come right at me. Well, we all knew the wind was changing and that would bring the fire right over us.
It was time to put things in the truck and car. I was going to put the dogs in the truck so I put my stuff in Mother's car. It was time to call my friend Lynda the Volunteer Fire Chief's wife. They live to the west of me. I asked where we were and what we were to do? She said she had just talked to Micky, the Chief and he said they were going to make a stand on Hamilton Rd. She told me that when she walked to her driveway the sky was aglow. He told her not to go yet so we were to wait for his call. Lynda was going to call me if we had to go. She told me that if she called and said GO, to GO right away! I told her we were thinking about just going to Norman. She said there were fires all over it would be best to stay here. It was 11pm and we were ready to go. Mother wanted to move her car onto a clear spot and leave it here. Great, all my stuff was in her car. Why did I bother to pack things up. I needed a good laugh at that point!!
Every time the phone rang my heart sank. It was Pat checking to see how we were doing. As the evening wore on the smoke seemed to clear and I thought we were out of the woods, so to speak. About 1am I got a call from a friend that had just help her friend move animals from not very far from me. She wanted to know if we were okay. I asked if the fire was still going and she said yes it was really going. I called Lynda and she said that yes the fire was still going but Micky hadn't made the call yet. I told her I hoped I didn't hear from her and at 2am I went to bed with the phone.
The next thing I knew it was morning and we had made it through the night. Thank God!! We had one more day before the rain and again we prayed we would make it. We did. Easter came with the rain. It was wonderful!!!
