Uninvited Dinner Guest
We hit the Mother load of Blackberry's day before yesterday!! Pat has been wanting a blackberry cobbler all summer. He braved the chiggers and thorns, came back bloody and itchy but with enough blackberry's to make a wonderful bready cobbler.
Last night I went to get butter out of the refrigerator on the deck. It was dark and we have seven cats, most black, that live on the deck. So it is not unusual to see several of them when you go out. As I walked out I noticed something scurrying down the deck stairs. It didn't register at first then I REALIZED!!! NOT A CAT, NOT A CAT!! As I stepped back into the house I was saying, "Raccoon, on the deck!"
** You must realize that raccoons are NOT friends to the farmer!! We have lost six chickens this summer alone. If they ate what they killed it wouldn't be so bad, but they kill a chicken, take a bit and kill another one. Not to mention the terror they cause the goats while they kill the chickens!!
Pat hopped up and grabbed his gun and flashlight and headed out the door. He didn't see anything so he came back in. He waited for 20 minutes and opened the door and there it was. Out he went, as I was saying, "Don't shoot the POOL!" We have an above ground pool that I just got this year. Pat chased the raccoon down the steps and it went under the deck. Raccoon 2, Pat 0. ~~ Our raccoon alarm is coffee cans on top of the cats feed bin.~~ About 20 minutes later we heard the cans fall. Pat headed out again. This time the Raccoon hid behind Pat's grill, at this point Pat was thinking, DON'T SHOOT THE GRILL, then up and over the rail off the deck and out of sight. Pat said it was growling all the way. Raccoon 3, Pat 0. By this time it was well past midnight and we have to get up early to milk and feed. Pat brought in the feed bin and we hit the hay.
Now that I think about it, I wondered why the cats seemed so hungry here lately. We had been putting out more and more food for them. Apparently I have cats that don't mind sharing their food!!
Oh and by the way, I did get the cobbler made!! There is just nothing better than warm bready blackberry cobbler with cream on top!!! YUMMY!!!
Today going to make Jalapeno Jelly, a friend brought us some home grown jalapeno's and I haven't ever made jalapeno jelly before. Another first on the Rosa!!
Blackberry jelly COMING SOON!!!
